The zip code used in Taiwan now originated in 1970, and it started with three digits because the island of Taiwan is not very large.
By 1985, the original zip code had limitations and could not be subdivided into specific streets and districts, so a new 5-digit zip code was developed. Add 2 digits after the original 3 digits. These 2 digits represent the delivery number. As long as the post office people see this number, they will know how to deliver.
In addition, the adoption of a new 5-digit zip code is also convenient for automatic machine identification. The main format is as follows:
The first 3-digit code represents the administrative area code, and the last 2-digit code represents the special delivery number. The new regulations were formulated in 1985, but the actual implementation was in 1991.
Today, there are still many people in Taiwan who only write the original 3-digit zip code when sending packages, so that the post office will also send the items. However, in order to improve the work efficiency of the post office, citizens are generally advised to fill in the complete 5-digit zip code.
However, as the economy continued to develop, the original zip codes had some limitations. In March 2020, Taiwan changed its postal code to a new 6-digit format with a format of 3+3.
